If you love Tofu as much as I do then you’re going to love this recipe!

At the moment, I’ve got an obsession with crispy Tofu and Tofu is such an amazing ingredient which can take on any flavours and textures you want for your dish. This recipe I would describe as a healthier version of crispy fried chicken bites. I’m thinking the bread-crumbed and fried kind of chicken pieces (which I will clarify, I have never tried) but this reminds me of thing sort of thing I’ve seen, but only no animals have been harmed in the making of this recipe!

And what better was to create healthier bread-crumbs than with my recent discovery/purchase of Gluten-Free Corn Flakes, which I have had fun experimenting with and taking myself back to childhood days where I also shared these Gluten Free Cornflake Squares Bars with you.

This recipe was inspired by my BBQ Tofu Nuggets which are coated in a homemade BBQ marinade and then tossed in a combination of cooked Quinoa and Millet, which creates a very tasty and nutritious nugget but these Gluten-Free Crusted BBQ Tofu Nuggets could quite possibly be my favourite, because they still use the same principal of a homemade BBQ marinade but instead the crispy crust comes from the Gluten-Free ‘Cornflakes’ which are seasoned with nutritional yeast, onion, garlic and black pepper which work perfectly with the BBQ sauce. The Cornflakes are best when they are whizzed up into fine crumbs, almost like bread-crumbs, only a little larger, which allows them to coat the Tofu nuggets all over.

These Gluten-Free Crusted BBQ Tofu Nuggets can be cooked in advance as they take some time to prepare so you would press and marinate your tofu pieces in advance and then coat them in the ‘crumbs’ the next day to be cooked when you are ready. They are very versatile and can be served as a side dish like I have done with some homemade baked beans and sweet-potato fries or they would be perfect as part of a Vegan party platter!

Gluten-Free Crusted BBQ Tofu

  • 400g block firm tofu, drained, pressed and marinated
  • ½ cup homemade or store bought BBQ sauce
  • 1 cup gluten-free corn flakes
  • 1 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  1. Firstly, prepare your tofu by draining the water content, pressing the water out by weighing it down with a heavy item for 20 minutes or more. Then dry with a paper towel and cut into equal sized cubes and then place in a container with some BBQ sauce to cover. Let marinate for 20 minutes or more (overnight is best)
  2. Then, pre-heat your ovento 350F/180C/Gas Mark 4. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and set aside.
  3. Next, add the remaining ingredients to a food processor and pulse until crumbs form (like breadcrumbs).
  4. Place the 'crumbs' in a bowl and one-by-one take a piece of tofu (add more BBQ sauce to each piece if necessary) and then drop into the crumbs and cover each side evenly and place on the baking tray. Repeat until all of the tofu has been used.
  5. Place in the oven to bake for approximately 45 minutes, or until golden and firm to touch.
  6. Serve with sweet-pototo fries and homemade beans if you wish.
