Crumble for Breakfast?! – Yes please!

I absolutely love this recipe, as I always without fail fancy sweet breakfasts. I cannot wake up and have a savoury breakfast, that’s just not me! So, this crumble is absolutely perfect for those of us with a sweet tooth, and you don’t just have to have it for breakfast, it would make a perfect dessert to curb those sweet cravings too and you won’t feel guilty as its refined sugar free and made with oats to make the crumbly topping.

I love anything with baked apples as the softness is just amazing and with the addition of cinnamon and raisins it pairs perfectly. The oat crumble topping has a wicked crunch to it and tops off the dish perfectly. Unfortunately, this does take some baking time, probably all-in-all the whole dish is going to take you an hour from start to finish but its so worth it when you’re eating it warm with some yogurt, I like natural plain or Greek yogurt or ‘Alpro’ coconut or vanilla yogurt.

This makes enough for approximately 4 servings so it could last a couple of days although it is best eaten fresh straight from the oven, but if you’re like me and don’t mind using the handy microwave to re-heat dishes then this is perfect for a couple of days left in the fridge for a quick breakfast or sweet dessert fix, but this is refined sugar free so therefore no need to feel guilty for over-indulging 🙂

Prep time
Cook time
Total time
Recipe type: gluten-free, dairy-free
Cuisine: breakfast, dessert
Serves: Serves 4
  • 3 sweet red-apples, sliced into wedges
  • ½ cup raisins
  • 80ml apple juice + 1tbsp water
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 cup rolled oats (gluten-free if required)
  • ½ cup shredded/desiccated coconut
  • 2 tbsp honey (maple syrup or agave nectar if vegan)
  • 1 tbsp. room temperature coconut oil
  • ¼ cup flaked almonds
  1. Pre-heat the oven to 120C/250F/Gas Mark 2.
  2. Combine the apple juice, water, ½ tsp vanilla essence and ½ tsp cinnamon in a small bowl.
  3. In a heat proof dish with a lid, add the apples, apple juice mixture and the raisins.
  4. Place in the oven with the lid on for 40-50 minutes (or until apples are soft), mixing every 10-15 minutes.
  5. Whilst the apples are cooking, prepare the topping by combining ½ the oats, coconut, honey and coconut oil with the remaining vanilla essence and cinnamon. Place in a food processor to break down and mix together. Then add the extra ½ cup oats without processing.
  6. Spread mixture on a lined baking tray and place in the oven for 30-40 minutes (or until golden brown), mixing every 10-15 minutes to prevent burning and 10 minutes before the end add the flaked almonds. When it is ready pour the crumb on top of apples and serve with some natural yogurt.
