Breakfast is my thing…It’s the best meal of the day and should set you up nicely, so if you’ve got a scrummy homemade batch of Granola, what can be better right?! The smell of your own granola cooking is the best thing (beside home-baked bread), and knowing exactly what ingredients and love has gone in to make it is even better.

I decided to make my own granola when I learnt and realised that many store bought products are not as good for you as they claim to be… Yes, even products you might consider to be healthy or certainly healthier than many other cereals out there. Many contain hydrogenated oils and processed refined sugar which is what we should try and avoid.

Whereas if you’re making your own you can cut down on the sugar by substituting natural sweeteners like dried fruits, such as cranberries, raisins, apricots, cinnamon, or honey, add more protein with nuts, sunflower and flax seeds and for extra fiber wheat germ and bran add additional fiber to the oat base. Therefore, making it far more beneficial to you to make your own granola adding whatever ingredients you prefer or have to hand at the time for a delicious and healthy start to your day.

Granola doesn’t just have to be consumed for breakfast, and if you’re like me and often need a sweet treat, then this is perfect to just spoon from the jar, or as granola bars or a dessert topping! It is delicious, nutritious and portable for on-the-go breakfasts and treats. My favourite way to enjoy this granola is served with some fresh fruit and thick Greek yogurt or over a warm baked sweet-potato… mmmhmm yummy!
